My online blogging business cost me $8 to set up, my fixed business overheads total about $5 a week for hosting and domain name registration. Sure there are quiet days when I do not make many sales, but I am not mortgaged to the hilt so there is no financial downside to this internet marketing model.

Posted April 23, 2009 Comments(1) Finding affiliate programs to use for making money from your blog is quite simple. I am signed up with two of the biggest marketplaces for affiliate programs – Commission Junction, who call themselves CJ, and ClickBank. It is completely FREE to join, they pay your commission by cheque (check) . CJ pay in sterling over here, but Clickbank pay in US$ checks unless you are generating a lot of sales. If you are outside the US this is not so convenient as getting your payments through Paypal and I suggest you opt to receive payments once they are above $100 otherwise bank charges will swallow up your earnings.
How to post your Affiliate Links
As soon as you are a registered affiliate, log in to your dashboard and you can search the marketplace for products in your niche that you can sell. Most merchants supply a variety of banners and text links with your affiliate ID coded in to them. It is easy to insert the code into your website, blog, email or forum signature and start promoting the products.
But you might not want to show your affiliate name, and there are people out there who could hijack your link ad get the commission for themselves. You also want to manage the placement of your links and update them fast if they change.
There is a great Wordpress plugin that you can use for this to protect your earnings, and it will help you sell more as an affiliate. It is called Wordpress Affiliate Link Cloak Plugin. The way it works is to link words and phrases in your blog content to one of your affiliate links, taking your readers straight to the product without the need to add an affiliate link every time. When you write a blog post about handbags, there will be a link to a company that sells accessories.
For me this plugin made all the difference in successful affiliate marketing: until I started using Affiliate Link Cloak, I spent hours messing about with affiliate codes without getting a decent payback for the time involved. Once the account details were programmed in, the links appeared like magic and my earnings soared.

I have been working online from home seriously for nearly three years now, and I have seen my fair share of internet scams and ripoffs. Intermittently I have taken up jobs, mainly to get out of the house and have some direct human contact! Ultimately I am the kind of person who prefers to work for myself: as my brother famously put it, I do this so that I can choose who to work with. Suppose I have a really awkward customer who I find it impossible to work with. As an employee I just have to put up with it: as my own boss I can tell that client where to go! Of course any sole trader values their customers and generally treats them better than and employee would. But it is nice to know that I have that option! That freedom is worth a lot to me and it is why I continue to write posts to my blogs and do (boring) keyword research. However lonely things can get, I would rather be chained to my laptop for ten years than work another day in the jungle of office politics again.

Every industry seems to have its own troubles at present. Well, the first advice if you want to reserach teh profitable industries is: stop listening to the news! They have to write attention-grabbing headlines every hour and when theses are dominated by one broad issue (the economy) the writers have to dig deeper into a small niche to think of anything new. So a story that would not make it on a busy day is now centre stage, and then represented in a thousand different ways for the next five bulletins. So take a break and free up YOUR creative powers to think how you can use the economic situation to your best advantage.
If you are trying to make money online, then you need to understand the fast pace of internet trends. A website can do a very nice trade in diamond studded wallets for futures traders, but if those traders suddenly lose their jobs, the market can disappear overnight. So the first and fundamental lesson is – diversify your income streams. Never rely on one income source, and in online business you must always have an eye to the next business trend.

There have been quite a few comments on the earlier articles I wrote about my experiences with Roger Hamilton and his XL Results Foundation, which claims to be dedicated to World Wide Wealth. Only one person made a really positive comment in support of joining the foundation. According to its website, XL Results foundation uses collective power to create and contribute wealth through Social Enterprise. XL Results Foundation claims to be a global entrepreneur network whose entrepreneur members share the tools and knowledge to greater profit and greater contribution. When I attended the business breakfast I saw why so many members and observers are alleging that Roger Hamilton is running a scam organisation. He is a persuasive speaker and by the end I wanted to find out more about this organisation that promised me the chance to network with thousands of other like minded entrepreneurs helping each other generate wealth. But I still had no idea of the cost or contract terms of the XL Results Foundation. This was only revealed to the group who chose to stay behind for the full story. Posted October 13, 2007 Comments(0) Starting your business from your own home reduces the investment that you need to make, so it can be an appealing idea: setting up a profitable home business needs plenty of organization and self discipline. Your home continues to be the place where you and your family live, and the business cannot be allowed to take over or no-one will do well.
The days of dormitory suburbs are over, and every town and village contains aspiring teleworkers, desperate to leave soul-destroying jobs in large conglomerates. The home has massive potential to adapt for multiple use, with a little planning and adaptation.
If you need a well resourced home office for your business, choose an area that is comfortable and suitable. Decide how much space you need, make sure it is well lit and warm enough. If you are using your computer, make sure your seat is well designed. Repetitive strain and neck injuries are sadly becoming more common and this will not help your business!
Businesses that require stock can be a real challenge for the home entrepreneur. Look for a space where you can access the items easily, and store them at the right temperature without causing a hazard to anyone else at home. If you turn a garage over to storage of goods, that could be eligible for a tax allowance so check with your accountant.
Do you need to meet customers or clients at your home? Make sure you have an area that looks professional and businesslike, where you can take them without tripping over bicycles or children’s toys. If you start to get more than a couple of visitors a day, you will need to think about getting permission to carry on a formal business from the local council – before the neighbours start complaining. Or meet your visitors elsewhere – depending on the situation, you may consider checking out cafes or hotels where noise levels are not too high. Otherwise look for a local serviced office centre, where you can often rent space by the day or even the hour.
Using your home as a business centre can save you a lot of cash, and help you get started in the tough early days of your new home business.
